Welcome to the Always Question Authority blog, established on 07.11.2011.

“Call me Madison.” I am an unapologetic non-accommodationist atheist. The intent of this blog is to inform readers of the vast negative social and political implications to humanity caused by the poison of specifically religious, and generally political, reactionary right-wing dogmatism.

This blog is for the well-informed, and well-read with an independence of mind that place a high value on reason, critical thought, and general intellectualism.

The Always Question Authority blog consists mostly of articles, videos, etc. that I have read, or watched, and choose to share with my readers. Posts penned by me will explicitly read “By Madison S. Hughes (mm.dd.yyyy).” All aphorisms are written by me, and labeled as such. I will re-post Aphorisms when updated. I will also re-post any article, video, etc., that I deem worthy of repetition. All other posts are linked to the source from which they were accessed, or, if able, the root source of their origin. I claim no credit for posts, that do not bear “By Madison S. Hughes (mm.dd.yyyy).” Additionally, epigraphical comments written by me will be indicated by ending with “[MSH].”

Although most of the material contained within will have social and political implications, some art, poetry, and music selections will be posted for aesthetic purposes only.

It is my sincere hope that you find the posts on this blog informative, intellectually stimulating, and rewarding. If you have any suggestions that you feel would make your visits even more profitable, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Introducing Girlcartridge

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, Girlcartridge.

Apart from the textbook definition of atheism, this blog aims to expose my particular flavor of atheism as well as my general worldview.

In particular, I feel that my point of view differs substantially from that of many other atheists out there, in two main respects. Firstly, I disagree with those who tend to think that religion is always and everywhere a destructive phenomenon. Secondly, I don't think that atheism really has the capacity to enhance one's own life, or, for that matter, is necessarily preferable to a religious mindset in any way that ever becomes important.

To some small degree, it is also about me, my life, and the stuff I like.

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, The Spiritual Rationalist.

Despite twelve years of Catholic school, I have never been a believer. I guess I was just born without the gene! Nevertheless, I've always tried to explore others' ideas and practices, on the theory that just because you can't use one part of a product, it doesn't mean you have to throw the whole thing away.

I spent over a decade traveling the world, and I've lived in both Europe and the US. I've read the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Koran. I've studied engineering, yoga, martial arts, shooting sports, and ballroom dancing. What I've discovered is that a) spirituality is just a spooky sounding word for any of a number of methods for learning about yourself and your mind, and b) whatever word you use, doing so is the single most important thing in learning to be happy.

My blog, The Spiritual Rationalist, is dedicated to my thoughts both on gaining self-knowledge and using your mind to eliminate misunderstanding and delusion.

Introducing Ojo Taylor

I have a long, successful and colorful history as the founder, main songwriter, spokesperson and keyboardist for the seminal Christian rock band Undercover. I also owned Brainstorm Artists International, a Christian Music record label distributed by Word Records and Sony Music. My faith began unraveling bit by bit over the years and it was only about 3 years ago after a period of intense study that I woke up and realized I just don't believe any of it anymore.

I had my coming out in an interview with a Christian Music magazine and used that as my first blog post. Needless to say that interview and many animated discussions on Facebook have generated quite a buzz in the Christian Music community and our fans. Since then I have been interviewed by Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor at the Freedom From Religion Foundation's radio show and on a number of christian radio shows as well.

My blog at www.ojotaylor.com is about "Music, Lovism, Freethought." The topics often all run together. I get a number of comments and questions, often nasty or thoughtless, that become the source for my posts and I have more ideas-in-waiting than time to write. My aim is to advance the cause of love in the world and to show people that belief in any god or religion is not only unnecessary but counterproductive towards that end. Religion is rarely harmless.

I am also an assistant professor of music at James Madison University teaching courses in Music Industry Studies. I would appreciate the support of a skeptical freethinking community and the opportunity to support in return. Thank you!

Introducing Godless Freedom

After 37 years of being a Christian I came to the conclusion that god can't possibly exist. For me it didn't make sense. My husband is agnostic and my two children are both baptized in the Catholic church. My oldest goes to Catholic school and has received all her sacraments. My son is too young for school yet but he will definitely NOT be following in his sister's footsteps. I am nervous about coming out to my extended family and some of my friends. For the time being I am for the most part a closet atheist looking for an outlet to share my journey into secularism. Hence the reason for my blog. I welcome feedback and comments and look forward to sharing in a community of like-minded thinkers.

Hi. I'm TheDon. Just over a year ago, I began a journey to find out exactly what I believed as a christian. Along the way, I read a couple of really insightful books: The Reason Driven Life by Robert Price and Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman. Of course, it brought me to a place of serious skepticism and ultimately, non-belief. During this transition, I needed a place to be myself as I explored this very strange time in my life. Thus, Lost My Faith In You was born. I assumed the moniker, TheDon because I required some anonymity. I was a christian for most of my life, having made that decision when I was six. I even worked on staff at my church. I am now 34 years old and married with five children. My wife is still a believer and it's a challenge to come to some sort of middle ground, but that is thankfully changing. Most of my friends are believers and unaware of my de-conversion. I write anonymously so that my family is protected.

I have a fascination with all things science, especially origins of life and the universe. I am also very intrigued with human psychology; what makes us be the way we are.

Lost My Faith In You is simply my journey, uncut and uncensored. I have no idea where this road will lead me, but I'm excited. I hope you can join me.

I'm Liv Jones, author of "Sheep Under the Sea", and I'd like to share with you The Secularity, a unique blog experience written from our interesting perspective. It's a open community, from many authors, that discusses news, politics, and religion, in real-time- generally biased towards atheism. Personally, I'm an Atheist who has started to wonder if she's a Christian. I'll never believe in the supernatural, but I believe the idea that doing good in this world is the best thing we can do as a society. Perhaps, as Elizabeth Gilbert once wrote, "God dwells within" me? Maybe if we replaced God in our prayers, as just a conversation with ourselves; explained as our mental workings simply trying to figure out our reality- then religion, doesn't seem so crazy. Introducing Effectual Agents

Hello everyone,

Just a quick word of introduction about my recently started secular humanist blog, Effectual Agents. The name, as many of you will no doubt recognize, is derived from an observation by Thomas Jefferson: "Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error." I'm interested in the usual grab bag of related issues that most of us are: science, skepticism, critical thinking, art, ethics, civil rights, atheism, logical fallacies, pseudoscience, and the separation of church and state.

I teach English and Critical Thinking at New York University and at The City University of New York, where I also serve as faculty advisor to the Bronx Community College Secular Humanist Club. The experience of talking and working with (mostly African-American and Latino) freethinking young people has contributed greatly to my own perspective on atheism, humanism, and skepticism, and has increased my appreciation for the value of outreach, mentoring, and support in the reality-based community, particularly for its newer and younger members.

I'm also very interested in working with other bloggers on mutual projects, inviting guest writers to contribute material, and otherwise fostering greater communication and sharing of resources. As this blogroll indicates, there's a tremendous wealth of ideas and information available to us all, and I would consider it a genuine privilege to occupy a few moments of your time each week.

Introducing Pragmatic Atheism

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, Pragmatic Atheism.

I welcome all to examine my blog that is dedicated to what I have chosen to call 'Pragmatic Atheism'. I consider this a third option about belief in God as distinct from the standard two options of 'scientific atheism' and 'religious theism'. Pragmatic Atheism is a lack of belief in God, or divine/supernatural concepts of any kind, based on regular everyday reasoning that is available to anyone and everyone, not just those familiar with the institution of science. Reason is much bigger than just 'scientific reason', which is actually a very specific kind of reasoning, and not even the most common. Advances in science have indeed done much to conquer the hold of theism onto global culture for centuries. We as modern atheists must recognize the contributions of science for our 'cause'. However, science is not really the only game in town in terms of critical thinking and open minded questioning and skepticism. Further, since science is very much an institution and a set of specialized professions, it is unclear that it is even the best approach as a basis for a more general atheism in modern culture. Science can only do or say so much about the issue of the existence of God. For what it can do, we should appeal to it, but the limits must be recognized and overcome for reason to win. Pragmatic Atheism seeks to do just that, go beyond the limits of science's input into the God debate, and build a broader and more far reaching basis for atheistic/rational thought.

Note that I do not use the phrase 'pragmatic atheism' in the standard sense as being synonymous with 'apatheism'. Suffice it to say for now, I am not an apatheist at all! For a full discussion of this difference in usage, see the 'about' page of my blog.

A call for atheist essays

Pete Darwin of The Caudal Lure is seeking essays for a planned book on the younger generations’ rise to atheism.

The idea for this book was brought about when I decided I wanted to tell my story about how I became an atheist, as well as share a bit about my personal life with religion and numerous fundi family members. It’s been a bumpy and interesting ride to say the least. However, while reflecting on my own history with religion and atheism I knew there must be numerous other interesting, amazing, scary, and even heartbreaking stories out there that should also be told.

This sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, I no longer qualify as young anymore so I will content myself be reading the book instead of contributing to it.

Hello, my name's Tim Martin. I'm a 26 year old research assistant in the field of cognitive neuroscience.

Over the past few years, I've done a lot of reading on science, religion, and atheism. I've learned a lot and solidified my stance as a firm atheist and rationalist. I started my blog in order to increase my participation in the discussion of subjects that matter to me.

I kicked off my blog with a number of posts on sex and religion, but future content will include any interesting areas where religion encroaches on secular knowledge and values. I'm especially interested in evolution, free will, morality, and basic human rights.

One of my goals is to provide information and analysis that will get people to consider things they hadn't before, as so much of what I've read lately has done for me. And I encourage discussion and debate; I wouldn't be content to only communicate with people who agree with me. I hope that people who disagree will comment with (hopefully rational) rebuttals!

Introducing Ellipsis

In the last six months, my life has been turned upside-down. After being a committed Evangelical Christian for my entire life, one even preparing to be a minister and professor of New Testament, I suddenly realized that I
couldn't accept the basic claims of Christianity. So, I'm trying to blog about life between what it used to be and what it will become, hence the
title of "Ellipsis."

In my blog, I basically talk about things that interest me, such as farming, environmentalism, social issues, etc. I also address a recurring theme (so far) of what it means to leave the church, especially as I recount some of
the conversations I'm having with family, friends, and mentors who still themselves remain committed Christians. Plus, I'm still going to be a
Biblical scholar and teacher of biblical studies, but I'm utilizing the blog to help myself think about what that will look like now. Basically, the blog is about trying to figure out my new view on life.

Hi, my name is Eli, a teenaged carbon-based lifeform (to borrow a line from Pat Condell).

I write and manage the blog 'Atheistic Worm Food', which is dedicated to commentary on relevant news and other essays on atheism and antitheism. I occasionally also write an open letter, generally concerning separation of church and state issues, which I file under 'activism'.

I became an agnostic at the age of twelve after debating a fellow tech-ie in an online forum. I realized I didn't have any evidence for my beliefs- that in fact, my beliefs were contradictory. While I slowly began to lose my belief in god, I turned to agnosticism, as I was afraid to declare myself an 'atheist'. After reading "The God Delusion", however, I was compelled to become such, and I've been embracing reality ever since.

Introducing Skeptical Child

Ever since I can remember, a part of me has always disbelieved that an omnipotent, all-knowing god exists somewhere in the multiverse. Yet as a youth, I trusted the Christians around me, which was probably why I prayed so hard for many years to make the ‘gay’ go away. Why would they lie to me? I had no reason to distrust them. Fruitless in my endeavor, I gave up…

That didn’t end my search for spiritual meaning, however. After a few years of drunken, soft-core drug abused, sex-filled nights, I had still come up empty handed. Ahem, no pun intended…

That’s when I discovered Buddhism—Tibetan Buddhism.

I was twenty-five or so. I began to sit on pillows, staring at nothing, and listening and watching the voice in my head. I thought I had found my path, the non-religious religion, a way to freedom. Buddhist teachers had spoken of transformation, of mental insights, and of being free from cyclical unhappiness. On the other hand, they also had spoken of magical realms, rainbow rays, and empty coffers.

Several years of mediation and contemplation later, I still wasn’t sated by that religion nor had I killed my ego, as suggested. And after a while, I began to understand that I had traded one set of illusions for another. I do confess, there is something to be gained from a calm mind, but primitive concepts still linger within this tradition. I harbor no antipathy toward those teachings or teachers, but one doesn’t do the world a whole lot of good when sitting in a ‘cave’ for hours on end. Imagine what one could achieve if she/he devoted that time to solving real problems!

I’m not certain how it happened—when I emerged into a complete and utter Atheist. It may have come around the time I discovered the brilliant Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris. Probably both. What they had written echoed through me. I do know that I have never felt freer than I do now, unfettered from ancient Bronze Age gods and myths. I am glad for this, and I am thankful I have an evolved mind that could reason away misconception… and move on to a liberated existence.

Why Skeptical Child? We should strive to gain more knowledge throughout life; and like children, we are always learning. Skepticism helps us see things truthfully. Will you let it help you?

I am pleased to introduce the Atheist blog Chrono-Synclastic Infundibulum to the members of the Atheist Blogroll. I am late publishing this introduction. I made a mistake with this introduction and misfiled it. My apologies.

Hi everyone! Salo here and I am the creator of Chrono-Synclastif Infundibulum. I am a software engineer who works in Sillicon Valley at a small startup company. I received my Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and have been programming since I was in high school. I absolutely love programming because it's like solving a free-form, math-based puzzle. I also love learning about new scientific ideas (I read Scientific American regularly). I have been gaming most of my life, and still play PC games regularly (FPS's and RPG's mostly). So yeah, I'm an all-around nerd.

I'm not all left-brain though. I learned to play both piano and violin as a kid, and I still enjoy partaking in the arts. Whether it's going to the San Francisco Symphony or Ballet, going to one of the many fantastic museums in the area, or just watching a good film, the arts play an important role in my life. They provide meaning and insight into the human condition in ways that nothing else can.

I am an atheist, and atheism and skepticism are the main theme of my blog. I grew up as a liberal Christian, although on reflection I was really deist at best (not that that's a good thing). I also grew up in Texas, so I have a lot of personal experience dealing with fundamentalists Christians and conservatives in general. (Let's just say that I am extremely grateful to not be in Texas anymore.) I have been an Atheist for about 6 years or so now, and accepting that I am an atheist was one of the most liberating experiences of my life. I think that my experiences growing up combined with my experiences as an engineer give me a somewhat unique perspective as an atheist, and I hope to convey those experiences through my blog.

On Becoming a member:

To join send me an email. Put "Join the Atheist Blogroll" in the subject line so that your email gets past my spam filter. In the body of the email indicate that you are an atheist or agnostic blogger and include be sure to include your URL. I will add your blog after I have verified that it meets the minimum requirements. Please allow me some to respond. I have a real job too!

I’ll be happy to post a link to your atheist/agnostic resource on the resources page. I will also add it to the full list of Atheist blogs, but make your blog qualifies as a resource.
