Introducing Football v. Religion

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist blogroll: Football v. Religion

It may have been a slow burn since the mid 1800s, but since televised football started in the late 1960s and more recently live football matches became available via satellite, football is on the up, and religion is well and truly in the relegation zone.

This blog aims to help explain why football will eventually replace religion, while pointing out the main similarities and differences between them.

Strangely, until recently I thought little about religion, but much about football. However, after 'having' to study the Philosophy of Religion as part of a larger course, I was forced to consider 'the argument for god'. I am now consumed with the complete ridiculousness of organised religion, especially the 3 main Abrahamic religions, and I am astounded by the complete lack of critical thinking or questioning that accompanies religious belief.

If people are happy in this delusion, so be it, but they wish to use religion to influence laws and governmental decisions that effect me and my life. That is just plain stupid.

I would not say that I was a 100% ATHEIST, but what I am is 100% convinced that there is absolutely NO truth in Christianity, Islam or Judaism.

There is no benign, all powerful being watching our every move and intervening - if there was he would have an awful lot of explaining to do !!!

Introducing Deity Shmeity

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist blogroll: Deity Shmeity

As you can tell by the name of my blog, Deity Shmeity, I don’t take God very seriously. I started blogging about religion a month ago in an effort to convince others to not take God seriously either. My motto, why be insulting when you can be dismissive?

My other motto, the official one, is “one day we’ll all be atheists, I’m just an early adopter.” I know that theism is on the decline and with a little rebranding, we can leave atheism’s baggage at the door and reclaim it’s most basic meaning--people who don’t believe in magic.

Introducing Hausdorff's Bible Blog

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist blogroll: Hausdorff's Bible Blog

I have recently heard many Atheists declare that the bible is full of terrible things. Although they usually seem credible, I have not read very much of the bible myself and it doesn't seem right to agree with them based on little evidence. I also notice that Christians are always talking about how much great stuff is in the bible. It seems to me that both sides are just seeing what they want to see. So what is the truth? Are the atheists right and the bible is mostly full of horrible things that seemed reasonable centuries ago? Are Christians right that the bible is mostly full of good things that we can use as a model to live our lives by? Or does the truth lie somewhere in the middle?

I aim to find this out for myself. Each day I read a little bit of the bible, write a summary of what happened and then add my commentary on it. Also, at the end of each book I write an extremely brief summary of the good and bad within. In an effort to avoid the whole "that is just old testament" argument I started at Matthew, but assuming I enjoy doing this for long enough I don't see a reason why I couldn't eventually cycle back to Genesis (and if this keeps being fun for a really long time I might do the book of Mormon, but at my current pace that is years away)

Since I started I have also expanded a bit. I am currently doing a book club with a CS Lewis book where I read a chapter a week and deconstruct it in a similar manner to my bible reading. I also have been writing about random topics that interest me on the weekend.

Introducing Atheism is Religion

Note: I realize Atheism is Religion may raise a few concerns as it runs counter to our prevailing rhetorical position, but the world is made of all types, so I let this blog join. I expect you all to be nice when visiting his blog.

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist Blogroll: Atheism is Religion

Hey! My name is Gareth Mensah,

I'm an ordained atheist minister who wrote a scripture for non-believers called Ordo Abchao, in which atheists, agnostics, gnostics, and part-time believers will find one bad-ass, epic immersion into the life of a member of the Atheism Is Religion (AIR) movement trying to survive one hell of an apocalyptic future where winged-creatures have invaded Earth, but mysteriously disappear at night.

I've created www.atheismisreligion.org where I post ten daily tips and wisdoms on how to become a better atheist. Theres' an assumption that exist within the non-believer community that atheism and anti-theism are one and the same, or broadly that a disbelief in god(s) necessarily goes with anti-religious feelings. As an ordained atheist minister, I try to dispel this misconception, and I also have a wiki about the AIR (Atheism Is Religion) movement called www.ordoabwiki.org where I explain the project of Ordo Abchao and the AIR movement. I also have another blog called o2a2.org where I aggregate all atheist-inspired graphics, quotes or videos.

So come check out my blogs for more information.  There are many voices in the non-believer community, I'm trying to voice mine and that of those with similar views that religion and atheism are not contradictory, but might actually be the future of the movement.

Introducing Reason Being

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist blogroll: Reason Being

I decided it is time to join the blogosphere.  I stated many times that I would not conform to this modern form of ego-stroking.  Who would possibly care about the thoughts rattling around in my head?  Why did I do it?  The simplest answer is out of frustration.  I am tired of reading the paper and putting it down in disgust.  I am tired of watching the news and changing the channel in dismay.  I am tired of overhearing so many tidbits of conversation (on a daily basis) that leave me walking away and shaking my head.  What could one person do against the tide of ignorance and insanity?  My answer was to write.  To write with the hope that perhaps others will find what I have to say encouraging, interesting, or better yet thought provoking.  Most of my posts will be related to articles that I read daily.

Where has the ability to reason gone?  It seems that many people no longer think for themselves.  They accept the canned answers provided to them by the political and religious forces that bombard us constantly.  In the U.S. both parties and all religions are guilty of this.   It has become too rare that we stop to question what we hear.  It is too common that we accept as fact, that what has no proof—be it political or religious.

I consider myself a secular humanist.  I do not believe that a God exists.  I do not believe that morality, in any way, has its roots in religion.  I embrace reason, ethics and science and reject dogma, superstition, and pseudoscience.   I believe that the human mind is a wonderfully complex organ.  Furthermore, that it is capable of discovering much about our universe, creation, our own bodies—many scientists and other modern thinkers are working on these ancient questions as I write these words.  I believe in proof and fact, not faith.

I am always open to discussion and welcome debate.  It is often through debate that we learn the most.

I created this blog as a place for rational discussion on germane Secular Humanist and atheist topics in today’s world

Oh yeah—the question, “Why Reason Being?”—I find wordplay to be quite entertaining.

Introducing Always Question Authority

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist Blogroll: Always Question Authority.

Welcome to the Always Question Authority blog, established on 07.11.2011.

“Call me Madison.” I am an unapologetic non-accommodationist atheist. The intent of this blog is to inform readers of the vast negative social and political implications to humanity caused by the poison of specifically religious, and generally political, reactionary right-wing dogmatism.

This blog is for the well-informed, and well-read with an independence of mind that place a high value on reason, critical thought, and general intellectualism.

The Always Question Authority blog consists mostly of articles, videos, etc. that I have read, or watched, and choose to share with my readers. Posts penned by me will explicitly read “By Madison S. Hughes (mm.dd.yyyy).” All aphorisms are written by me, and labeled as such. I will re-post Aphorisms when updated. I will also re-post any article, video, etc., that I deem worthy of repetition. All other posts are linked to the source from which they were accessed, or, if able, the root source of their origin. I claim no credit for posts, that do not bear “By Madison S. Hughes (mm.dd.yyyy).” Additionally, epigraphical comments written by me will be indicated by ending with “[MSH].”

Although most of the material contained within will have social and political implications, some art, poetry, and music selections will be posted for aesthetic purposes only.

It is my sincere hope that you find the posts on this blog informative, intellectually stimulating, and rewarding. If you have any suggestions that you feel would make your visits even more profitable, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

In Reason,

Madison

I cover subjects like atheism, goal setting, death, morality and do a little bit of self improvement. This blog is always a work in progress and I am continually looking for new content to cover and interesting things to talk about. I'm not right about everything, but I argue always to the best of my ability.

Introducing The Spiritual Rationalist

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, The Spiritual Rationalist.

Despite twelve years of Catholic school, I have never been a believer. I guess I was just born without the gene! Nevertheless, I've always tried to explore others' ideas and practices, on the theory that just because you can't use one part of a product, it doesn't mean you have to throw the whole thing away.

I spent over a decade traveling the world, and I've lived in both Europe and the US. I've read the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Koran. I've studied engineering, yoga, martial arts, shooting sports, and ballroom dancing. What I've discovered is that a) spirituality is just a spooky sounding word for any of a number of methods for learning about yourself and your mind, and b) whatever word you use, doing so is the single most important thing in learning to be happy.

My blog, The Spiritual Rationalist, is dedicated to my thoughts both on gaining self-knowledge and using your mind to eliminate misunderstanding and delusion.

Introducing Ojo Taylor

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, Ojo Taylor

I have a long, successful and colorful history as the founder, main songwriter, spokesperson and keyboardist for the seminal Christian rock band Undercover.  I also owned Brainstorm Artists International, a Christian Music record label distributed by Word Records and Sony Music.  My faith began unraveling bit by bit over the years and it was only about 3 years ago after a period of intense study that I woke up and realized I just don't believe any of it anymore.

I had my coming out in an interview with a Christian Music magazine and used that as my first blog post.  Needless to say that interview and many animated discussions on Facebook have generated quite a buzz in the Christian Music community and our fans. Since then I have been interviewed by Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor at the Freedom From Religion Foundation's radio show and on a number of christian radio shows as well.

My blog at www.ojotaylor.com is about "Music, Lovism, Freethought." The topics often all run together. I get a number of comments and questions, often nasty or thoughtless, that become the source for my posts and I have more ideas-in-waiting than time to write.  My aim is to advance the cause of love in the world and to show people that belief in any god or religion is not only unnecessary but counterproductive towards that end.  Religion is rarely harmless.

I am also an assistant professor of music at James Madison University teaching courses in Music Industry Studies. I would appreciate the support of a skeptical freethinking community and the opportunity to support in return.  Thank you!

Introducing Godless Freedom

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, Godless Freedom.

After 37 years of being a Christian I came to the conclusion that god can't possibly exist. For me it didn't make sense. My husband is agnostic and my two children are both baptized in the Catholic church. My oldest goes to Catholic school and has received all her sacraments. My son is too young for school yet but he will definitely NOT be following in his sister's footsteps. I am nervous about coming out to my extended family and some of my friends. For the time being I am for the most part a closet atheist looking for an outlet to share my journey into secularism. Hence the reason for my blog. I welcome feedback and comments and look forward to sharing in a community of like-minded thinkers.

Introducing Lost My Faith in You

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, Lost My Faith In You.

Hi.  I'm TheDon.  Just over a year ago, I began a journey to find out exactly what I believed as a christian.  Along the way, I read a couple of really insightful books: The Reason Driven Life by Robert Price and Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman.  Of course, it brought me to a place of serious skepticism and ultimately, non-belief.  During this transition, I needed a place to be myself as I explored this very strange time in my life.  Thus, Lost My Faith In You was born.  I assumed the moniker, TheDon because I required some anonymity.  I was a christian for most of my life, having made that decision when I was six.  I even worked on staff at my church. I am now 34 years old and married with five children.  My wife is still a believer and it's a challenge to come to some sort of middle ground, but that is thankfully changing.  Most of my friends are believers and unaware of my de-conversion.  I write anonymously so that my family is protected.

I have a fascination with all things science, especially origins of life and the universe.  I am also very intrigued with human psychology; what makes us be the way we are.

Lost My Faith In You is simply my journey, uncut and uncensored.  I have no idea where this road will lead me, but I'm excited.  I hope you can join me.

Introducing the Truthful Heretic.

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, the Truthful Heretic.

Dear fellow Homo sapiens, or if you prefer conscious mammals! And of course, friends nonetheless: My name is B.S Knight and I am the writer of the Truthful Heretic. I created my blog in order to speak my very weird mind, mostly about three subjects (as I identify myself and my state of mind with them): Atheism, as I was born in the Middle East and saw and felt the affects of Islam; Homosexuality and equal rights, as a gay man who has tasted the Homophobia and also Sexism in that society; and Liberalism and political philosophy, which I think is a good ground for secular values and criticism of fundamentalism. If you wish, visit and join your state of mind to mine. I hope they don't short circuit!

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, Greatplay.net.

My name is Peter Hurford and I am the creator of www.greatplay.net, a blog for philosophy, politics, economics, and a few other things.  I write to try to get to the bottom of it all, and this quite often involves discussing atheism -- both making arguments for why religion is false and trying to figure out why, despite these arguments, believers still believe as they do.  Feel free to read along.  There are new posts every weekday.

Introducing the Secularity

Please join me in welcoming one of the newest members of the Atheist Blogroll, The Secularity.

I'm Liv Jones, author of "Sheep Under the Sea", and I'd like to share with you The Secularity, a unique blog experience written from our interesting perspective. It's a open community, from many authors, that discusses news, politics, and religion, in real-time- generally biased towards atheism. Most all our authors are Atheist, though we do encourage, any secular belief to contribute.

Personally, I'm an Atheist who has started to wonder if she's a Christian. I'll never believe in the supernatural, but I believe the idea that doing good in this world is the best thing we can do as a society. Perhaps, as Elizabeth Gilbert once wrote, "God dwells within" me? Maybe if we replaced God in our prayers, as just a conversation with ourselves; explained as our mental workings simply trying to figure out our reality- then religion, doesn't seem so crazy. Of course many disagree, and that's the beauty of our little website which we'd welcome anyone who's interested to participate in.

So drop on by and visit! We'd love how to see how you see the world!

It also addresses current events of interest to addicts, alcoholics, and atheists.
