Introducing Football v. Religion

We’ve had a new blog join the Atheist blogroll: Football v. Religion

It may have been a slow burn since the mid 1800s, but since televised football started in the late 1960s and more recently live football matches became available via satellite, football is on the up, and religion is well and truly in the relegation zone.

This blog aims to help explain why football will eventually replace religion, while pointing out the main similarities and differences between them.

Strangely, until recently I thought little about religion, but much about football. However, after 'having' to study the Philosophy of Religion as part of a larger course, I was forced to consider 'the argument for god'. I am now consumed with the complete ridiculousness of organised religion, especially the 3 main Abrahamic religions, and I am astounded by the complete lack of critical thinking or questioning that accompanies religious belief.

If people are happy in this delusion, so be it, but they wish to use religion to influence laws and governmental decisions that effect me and my life. That is just plain stupid.

I would not say that I was a 100% ATHEIST, but what I am is 100% convinced that there is absolutely NO truth in Christianity, Islam or Judaism.

There is no benign, all powerful being watching our every move and intervening - if there was he would have an awful lot of explaining to do !!!

I found your post to be very interesting! I also was wondering about your claim that there is no truth in Christianity. I have done several studies on religions and agree with you that Judaism and Islam are both false religions, but the evidence for the validity of Christianity stands out to me.

For example is this argument:
Through the bibliographical test, used on all ancient texts, the New Testament proves itself to be a reliable and trustworthy text. Building on that we find that Jesus fulfilled dozens of Messianic prophecies and did resurrect from the dead. No historical sources disagree that Jesus died and that his tomb was empty after three days. Though people argue different reasons for why the tomb was empty, such as someone stole the body, none of the explanations measure up. Going back to the bibliographical test which proves the New Testament a reliable source, we conclude that Jesus is who he said he is and can be trusted.

I would be really interested in hearing some arguments on why you think there is no truth in Christianity.

Lauren - those are the sorts of things Lee Strobel and Josh McDowell will tell you. Unfortunately they leave out significant facts that put the lie to those assertions.

1 - "Through the bibliographical test, used on all ancient texts, the New Testament proves itself to be a reliable and trustworthy text." - This is incorrect. The bible does not pass any test for accuracy of historical content. It only passes tests that show that the words that we have now are pretty close to what was written down when the accounts were written, some 30-120 years after the date Jesus is purported to have died. There is no evidence for the traditional authorship of the canonical texts. There is plenty of evidence that these accounts were written by others and attributed later to particular apostles. The gospels are clearly not eyewitness accounts, because not only are they frequently contradictory (despite what Strobel & Co. would claim about complimentary) but the gospels of Matthew and Luke clearly used Mark as a source (or they all used "Q" - the name given to the speculated source gospel they may have worked from) with details altered or added to suit the author's particular point of view. There is more, but that's a taste. There is no reason to buy the historicity argument of apologists.

2 - "Building on that we find that Jesus fulfilled dozens of Messianic prophecies" - Not so much. Most of the prophecies are the result of quote-mining by the mythmakers of the New Testament. The verses in question were, for the most part, never understood to be anything remotely messianic Jewish scholars, and are still not so. The concept of prophecies with two fulfillments was created as scholars found that the prophecies in question were actually talking about someone other than Christ. It's an excuse, not a sign. Above that, it's easy when you're mythmaking to go back and find verses and passages and write the story to suit what you're trying to say.

3 - "and did resurrect from the dead. No historical sources disagree that Jesus died and that his tomb was empty after three days." - No historical sources other than the mythical scriptures ever mention Jesus, his death, and his resurrection, period. Nobody was talking about him at all. Of the most oft referred-to sources, most mention nothing about Jesus, but rather the church, many decades after his death. This means nothing other than there was a religious movement that was a Jewish offshoot cult. The most impressive mention is in Josephus, the verses of which are known interpolations, clearly debunked. No scholar worth his salt claims these to be true. There is absolutely zero evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and nearly as little for his existence in the first place.

4 - "Though people argue different reasons for why the tomb was empty, such as someone stole the body, none of the explanations measure up." - Forgetting for a moment the utter lack of evidence for his existence and particular crucifixion, there are plenty of arguments that hold water. Your wish to believe doesn't change that. The writings attributed to Paul seem to indicate the author believed in a spiritual resurrection. By the time the gospel stories were actually recorded, it was decades after the supposed fact, so you aren't getting some sort of on-the-scene report. The resurrection becomes whatever the author wants it to be. That's why the stories disagree on nearly every major aspect of the resurrection - they were written down to define the myth that had likely started as a grief response, anything from a single hallucination to an outright fabrication. There is no evidence that any of the apostles died as claimed by the church - not one corroborating source for their supposed ministries and deaths. So for Christians to claim that the "fact" that they wouldn't "die for a lie" is pointless. We don't know if they died for something at all. It was later Christians who faced some Roman persecution (likely much less than tradition states as well.) You have to realize how poor communication was and how much time had passed. Nobody demanded much in the way of proof at that time. They believed what wandering priests and self-proclaimed prophets told them with almost no resistance, unless it was in defense of another belief system.

5 - "Going back to the bibliographical test which proves the New Testament a reliable source, we conclude that Jesus is who he said he is and can be trusted." - You cannot even begin to make this statement with any sort of conviction. There is no evidence beyond your self-contradictory book, and that's not nearly enough.

6 - "I would be really interested in hearing some arguments on why you think there is no truth in Christianity." - Well, that's a start. Cheers.

I have the proof of why Einsteins theory of relativity is wrong. Written a long theory about the infinity reactionchain. (look at the pictures only if you have hard to understand)

http://invinsibleforce.com
(PROOF from UNIVERSE of Gods non existance also)

Even Einstein understood that everything not was normal. So he said theory of relativity AND special theory of relativity (those theories are wrong but he was on the way), but I have found it in infinities. Normal infinity and special infinity.

I do not think that there is necessarily any evidence to show that Christianity is more valid than Judaism or Islam. There may not be scientific evidence that can prove that Jesus rose from the dead, but most historians believe that he did exist as a historical person. The canonical gospels were written after Jesus had died, but that does not necessarily mean that the writers had never met Jesus, or spoke with people who had. Also, there are non-canonical religious writings, such as the gospel of Thomas, which were written closer to Jesus' death.

( This blog aims to help explain why football will eventually replace religion, )
what will you say when this does not happen Christianity will decrease but religion will not. Actually religion(islam, buddhist, hindusim,etc..) (and I include the catholic religion under religion and not Christianity) will continue to function on a popular level. as time moves on toward a one world gov. in which religion will play a roll in the function of the one world gov.

(There is no benign, all powerful being watching our every move and intervening - if there was he would have an awful lot of explaining to do !!!)
explain how you can make an absolute statement like this. is this not basically a god like statement placing yourself in a position to know everything and in knowing everything you pronounce there is no god. But i am guessing you are a human being confined to this earth (unless you are an astronaut) with the same vantage point as the rest of the human race. why may i ask should your statement be taken as absolute truth. there is no god because i say so. so what who are you.

Hello,

I used to be known as Britney British of God Help Britain blog. I used to live in a muslim ghetto in Leicester.

I've spent many years trying to wake people up to Islam but knew deep down I was wasting my time. You cannot beat Islam with might.

What you can beat Islam on though is what we are better at than they are.....humour. What better way to humiliate them and make then cringe with regret is to let them know they worship a volcano god?

Yes, the Abrahamic religions were all based on the very common human error of seeing the divine in volcanoes. The ancient Hebrews worshipped Yahweh, the imaginery volcano god inside Mount Sinai in Arabia, most likely NW Saudi. They camped at the base of it, they slit animals' throat to appease it and they established a law to keep the clan inline so as to not upset their fire and brimstone spewing wrathful and vengefull volcano god.

The ten plagues of Egypt were caused by the fallout from the Santorini eruption, the burning bush was a flaming gas leak on the slopes of Mt Sinai, angels were smoking vents, the lake of fire was the lava filled crater.

So, we have in our hands a very real way to make Islam crumble in a day. Who would carry on their jihad knowing we were all laughing at them and making cartoons of ancient nomads bowing down to a volcano? The potential humour is endless.

Unfortunately, this get-out-of-Islam comes at a dear price and this price will be too great to pay by a lot of the anti-Islam community. Take another look at the name of the blog I used to run......GOD HELP BRITAIN. I used to be a Christian until I realised god was a volcano. But how many Christians in this community do you know who would be prepared to accept the price.....to forever give up on their god? Not many.....only the very very honest ones who really, truly, deeply put liberty and freedom before all else.

So, I leave it up to you to decide what is more important to you.....freedom or holding out hope for god?

I kind of agree with you. I can see the deist stance or the stance that there MIGHT be a creator if they existed outside of what we consider to be time and space. But to say that there is a "loving" god that monitors your thoughts like a celestial "big brother" from GO's 1984 is a little unsettling. And a deist God wouldn't care about praise or worship. Nor would it really have any influence on us since we are in the bubble of time and space and "it" is not.

A Theist god allows for all sorts of human corruption to be generated, not only because Theism is an obviously man-made creation, but because all of the tenants of every theistic cult reflect base human impulses. Jealousy, Greed, Rage, Stratification...

I would just like to point out that Atheism is simply the rejection of theistic beliefs. So in all actuality you are an Atheist. The difference being that maybe you don't reject that these is some sort of "god" out there. That would make you a Deist but technically you could be both a Deist and Atheist at the same time. :)

A gift for you from the wilderness.
The true Gospel is now delivered to you Rev 12:6 as a witness Matt 24:14.
Our heavenly Father will NOT put any child of his into a hell fire no matter what their sins. Sin doesn't scare God! He created it Isa 45:7 to teach us all the knowledge of good and evil Gen 3:22 for our eternal placement in his coming kingdom. Throwing a child of his into a hell fire has never entered the heart or mind of God to ever do such a thing Jer7:31, Jer 19:5. Anyone preaching a hell fire to God's children has been deceived into teaching lies. The whole world has been believing in a god of hate murder and revenge (The devil Rev 12:9). The true word of God John 1:1 is now delivered Rev 12:5 here http://thegoodtale.wordpress.com/

God chose a woman Rev 12 to be the prophet like unto Moses Num 12:3 and Elijah Matt 17:3, Acts 3:21-23, Luke 1:17. Those professing themselves to be Christians would be wise to hear all Acts 3:23 BEFORE making any judgment. The proof of what I tell you is in the hearing.

Prove ALL things 1 Thes 5:21. Satan has deceived the whole world Rev 12:9 until now.

ATHEISTS HAVE FAITH?

Faith Defined: Belief that is not based on proof.

Atheists have faith that there is no God.

Atheists have faith that the theory of evolution is true. There is no scientific evidence to support the theory of evolution.

Atheists have faith that there is no heaven and no hell.

Atheists have faith that men evolved from green pond scum. There is no proof that that occurred.

Atheist have faith in the Big Bang Theory and that it produced life. In order for atheist to believe in the Big Bang Theory they have to first have faith that someone created something to crash together. Atheist do have faith. There is no proof in The Big Bang Theory.

Atheist have faith that when they die, they will cease to exist. There is no proof of that.

Atheist have faith that if they reject God and His Son Jesus Christ that there will be no consequences for there unbelief. They have no proof of that.

Atheist have faith that there is no book of life.

Revelation 20:14-15 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not fund written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BASE WHERE YOU WILL SPEND ETERNITY BY PROFESSING THE FAITH OF AN ATHEIST?

Matthew 25:31-46 ....These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

What a bunch of wishfool (non)thinking. Christians have always been in the minority. Some periods of history, more of a remnant than others, but still a minority. In other words, we not going away - that is, not until the rapture.

Looney said...

Thanks, Sue - be sure not to ever let facts or reality get in your way. Just in case the rapture is happening, you should run outside every morning and try and jump into the air. Surely one of these times it will work.

And I should recommend doing so naked, as you don't want to litter the sidewalk with your clothing.

Good luck!
